Roundup 14 March 2024 | Soma discount, new Instruo, Expert Sleepers, Pittsburgh Modular and more...

Here's our latest newsletter! Want to get this in your inbox every fortnight? Just scroll down to the footer and enter your email address to sign up.

We’re back!

It’s a Signal Sounds tradition to start these newsletters with an apology for it being more than two weeks since the last one… so why break the habit of a lifetime?

In our defence, there has been quite a lot going on here at Signal Sounds HQ. Here’s all the big news…

Firstly, our new and improved website is now live! OK, it doesn’t look that different, but under the hood we’ve moved to a shiny new platform which means there’s now a proper preorder system and you can filter search results by brand, price and what’s in stock. If you already have an account with us, you’ll just need to reset your password the first time you log in. And if you spot anything that’s not working quite as it should, let us know - we’re always keen to get your feedback. (Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to migrate wish lists from the old system - sorry!)

Secondly, we’re heading south this weekend for the London Synth & Pedal Expo in Hackney Wick. We’ll be bringing a bunch of gear along and offering a whopping 20% off selected brands plus 10% off everything else, with even better deals on some items on the day. It’s free to come along - you just need to RSVP here and book an arrival time slot. Last year’s event was stupidly popular so we’re expecting this to be a busy one.

Last but not least, the Signal Sounds family has grown a bit since our last newsletter: Molly joined us last year to work with Aleks on the distribution side, and Tom arrived last week to look after day-to-day operations and give our content and marketing a bit of love. So expect more regular newsletters from now on (honest!) and a bit more blog and video action to keep you informed on all the exciting stuff going on in and around the shop.

As ever, we’ve got loads of great new products to tell you about, so read on to find out what’s just landed and what’s up for preorder.

Until next time,

Jason, Aleks, Kyle, Luke, Molly, Robert & Tom

What's hot

If you’ve had your eye on the Soma Laboratory Pulsar-23 then you’re in luck! The amazing semi-modular organismic drum machine is available with 15% off for a limited time. We have a handful of most colours in stock at the moment, with more coming soon. Get in there!

Fresh off the production line at Instruo is Dapf, a twin analogue all-pass filter for all your phase-shifting and psychoacoustic stereo enhancement needs. Check out DivKid’s awesome demo and Jason Lim’s feature-length deep dive to hear more. It’s fair to say that even DivKid was surprised at how fundamental to many synthesis techniques the phase elements of an all-pass filter are! Bag yours here.

Expert Sleepers continue their analogue odyssey with the utterly brilliant Otterley, a quintuple LFO with a ‘spread’ feature for adjusting the frequency relationship. Perfect for Steve Reich-style phasing fun. Once again DivKid delivers the goods on the ‘Tube. Grab one here.

There’s a new arrival from the cool cats at Pittsburgh Modular: the Taiga Keyboard soups up their roaringly successful semi-modular desktop synth with a premium 37-note keyboard and 24HP of space for your own modules. Stick an all-black Maths in there to keep the cool aesthetic going or go all colour contrast and eye-popping with something purple from Mystic Circuits… the choice is yours. These won’t hang around for long - buy here.

Neutral Labs have dropped a special white edition of their hit Elmyra 2 drone box. Four voices of touch-activated wavetable goodness that all run through a filthy filter, distortion and delay - check out Tom’s patch ideas on YouTube for some inspiration. Order yours here.

The latest oddball masterpiece from the Manifold Research Centre is here: The Map Is Not The Territoire is a matrix mixer with a unique magnetic pinboard interface. Deliciously tactile and gorgeous to look at - what a combo! These are super-limited, hand-made masterpieces and you can only buy them from Signal Sounds. Cop it here.

Restocks & preorders

Plenty of in-demand stuff has landed at Signal Sounds HQ over the last week or two: we’ve had a big drop from the mighty Soma Laboratory (including the “is it a charcuterie board, is it a synth?” Terra and the Lyra-8); hardware sequencer favourites the Oxi One and Torso T-1 are back; and we’ve got a few of the long-unavailable Industrial Music Electronics Bionic Lester filter. Don’t sleep!

We’ve also got a few exciting things up for preorder: the new 4ms Company Catalyst Sequencer and Catalyst Controller modules are due soon, and we’re expecting another batch of the awesome Torso S-4 desktop sampler in June - these will fly out the door so get in there if you want to reserve one. Synth-wise we’re also taking preorders for the Future Retro Vectra and the Supercritical Redshift 6.

In the spotlight

It’s easy to forget what an awesomely powerful module the Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 is. Unparalleled in terms of functions per square inch, this 4HP marvel offers everything from VCOs, VCFs, VCAs, LFOs and envelopes to sample playback, audio recording, quantising, Euclidean pattern generation, Turing Machine-style shift registers, delays, reverbs, vocoders… the list literally goes on and on! It’s the perfect Swiss army knife for any case. Check out our pal Mylar Melodies’ recent video (above) spotlighting six things you might not realise a Disting can do…

Out and about

Here’s a roundup of some of the events and club nights happening in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh over the next few weeks:

  • Wavetable, a monthly night of sonic experimentation in Edinburgh, is back at Whitespace on Thursday 21 March with performances from TRSSX, Pop-Up Kings and Maniatrix.
  • Live electronic night Noise Box returns to Bloc+ on Friday 22 March with Urgula performing alongside DJs Chris Curtis and Element 1-15.
  • Washington DC wonder duo Beautiful Swimmers return to our favourite Glasgow spot La Cheetah on Saturday 23 March. Their 2018 show is still spoken about in awed tones, so expectations are high for this one.
  • The Attack Release gang are back at Bloc+ on Wednesday 27 March with performances from Yoker Moon, Tayus and KY-10.
  • And finally, an early heads-up for the Detroit techno heads: Underground Resistance are bringing the mighty Depth Charge project to the legendary Club 69 in Paisley on Friday 19 April. Talking of UR, make sure to check out Roland’s ace mini-documentary on Mad Mike and co…

And finally...

Our favourite DAW, Bitwig, is running a special offer for the next couple of weeks: until 25 March, if you buy any Bitwig Studio licence - including educational and upgrade licences - you’ll get a free copy of Arturia’s Jun-6 V soft synth. Juno it makes sense!
